Exam Pattern

Now various PSU’s like: IOCL, NTPC, CONCOR, GAIL, BPCL, HPCL, BHEL, PGCIL, BEL, DDA etc. companies are considering GATE SCORE for their Recruitment. PSU Companies short list 2.5 to 3.5 times number of candidates for the interview process after GATE Exam result.

There are around 250+ PSUs all over India most of which are not tied up with GATE but conduct their own recruitment process. Exam syllabus of each PSU may vary with company profile and current requirements with minor changes compared to previous years.

  • Syllabus and questions asked in PSU exams are not much different form GATE & IES. Candidates preparing for GATE & IES will find it easy to qualify in any PSU written test.
  • We don't really need to prepare separately for PSUs, if you are preparing for GATE or IES because exams like GATE will also cover non technical topics like GENERAL ENGLISH, APTITUDE and REASONING which are common with many PSU exam patterns and moreover many questions were found repeated from previous GATE & IES Papers.
  • Paper Pattern, time and number of questions asked may vary from company to company but many PSUs generally test candidates in two papers.

Technical Section: Subject of Related Stream

Non Technical Section: General Knowledge, Aptitude, General English, Reasoning

  • The questions of the Technical test depend on the discipline chosen among the different engineering disciplines like Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics, Civil, Control and Instrumentation, HR & Finance etc.
  • The number of questions in the Technical Test and Non technical might vary from 100-150 depending on time and pattern.
  • Non Technical questions will be common to all specializations.
  • The questions asked will be of multiple choice.
  • The questions will test in depth knowledge on theoretical concepts more than problems as no calculator will be allowed to carry into examination hall.
  • More than just having subject knowledge, time management is an important issue as you will get less than 1minute to answer each question.
  • Non Technical sections consists of questions on topics like Synonyms, Antonyms, Fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word, Word Analogies, Comprehension Passages in GENERAL ENGLISH.
  • There can be some questions on Aptitude and Reasoning to test your problem solving skills on topics like time and distance, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, odd man out etc.
Listed are few companies and their exam patterns.
